Overview

It is the work of Conservative dentists and Endodontists to tackle the burden of dental caries, helping people keep their smiles. There is a global demand for dental surgeons who are highly skilled in this field. The need of the hour is to train specialists with sound scientific knowledge and skills to tackle ethically varied and challenging clinical scenarios affecting the teeth with ease and proficiency.

Objective

Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics deals with prevention and treatment of the diseases and injuries of the hard tissues, the pulp, and associated periapex. This intensive MDS programme 

  • Has a strong clinical basis with a sound knowledge base and aims to develop the cognitive, psychomotor, research and interpersonal skills required to enable students to undertake the independent practice of Endodontics at a specialist level. 
  • Fosters the ability to analyse problems, discuss available options, select appropriate treatment, and develop the clinical and surgical skills to execute the treatment with a high degree of competence and empathetic attitude.
  • Imparts knowledge on theoretical sciences relevant to Restorative Dentistry and Endodontics.
  • Ensures the ability to plan multidisciplinary treatments and preventive strategies specific to the needs of patients.
  • Works to train students in all levels of restorative work, non-surgical and surgical Endodontics.
  • Incorporate advanced diagnostics and technology in patient management. 
  • Instill in students an aptitude for research.
  • Inculcates leadership skills.

Programme specialisation Teaching Module (PSTM) 1 — 6

There are two components to this. Component 1 (Continuous Evaluation of Module CEM) for PSTM 1 – 6 includes theory assessment, assignment, clinical assessment, and viva voce.

Component 2 (Programme End Exam CEE) has a theory component, clinical component, pedagogy and viva voce.

Theory component

Part I

  • Paper I (Applied Basic Sciences): Applied Anatomy, Physiology, & Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Research Methodology and Biostatistics

Part-II

  • Paper I: Conservative Dentistry
  • Paper II: Endodontics
  • Paper III: Descriptive and analysing type questions and clinical component

    Written exams consist of three-hour papers. The other papers consist of long answer questions carrying 25 mark each and five questions carrying 10 marks each. Questions on recent advances may be asked in all papers

Clinical Component

A structured clinical exam for different exercises will be assessed for 200 marks.

  • Case discussion and performing an anterior cast post and core, casting, cementation retraction and rubber base impression (50 marks)
  • Case discussion and performing of posterior Class II cast inlay preparation with wax pattern fabrication or ceramic inlay preparation with rubber base impression (50 marks)
  • Case discussion and performance of molar RCT up to master cone selection (100 marks)

Pedagogy and Viva voce Component

A structured viva voce exam for 80 marks and pedagogy for 20 marks conducted during a clinical exam

Research, Faculty Common and Elective Modules

These modules will be assessed as per the norms as specified in the module specification. The assessment for these modules is through tests, presentations or any other method as specified in the module specification

Admissions

Eligibility

Candidates must have a recognised degree of Bachelor’s in Dental Surgery awarded by a University or institute in India and registered with the State Dental Council. The Candidate must have obtained a provisional or permanent registration and undergone compulsory rotatory internship for a year in an approved and recognised dental college

Application Process

Students seeking admissions are required to appear and qualify in the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET-MDS) conducted on all India basis.

Eligibility

  • The Council may, on payment of the prescribed fee for registration, grant temporary registration for the duration of the post-graduate training restricted to the dental college/​institution to which he or she is admitted for the time being exclusively for post-graduate studies: Provided further that temporary registration to such foreign national shall be subject to the condition that such person is duly registered as medical practitioner in his/​her own country from which he/​she has obtained his/​her basics dental qualification and that his/​her degree is recognized by the corresponding state dental council or concerned authority
  • Equivalence certificate by Association of Indian Universities
  • Should have proof of proficiency in English with a minimum TOEFL score of 8
