Oral Medicine Diagnosis & Radiology is the specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and medical management of diseases of the Head and Neck. It is a unique field of dentistry that combines both Oral Medicine and Craniofacial Radiology. It serves as a bridge that links dentistry and medicine aiding in early diagnosis of several systemic diseases having oral manifestations. In such clinical situations, an Oral Medicine, Diagnosis & Radiology Specialist can decide what investigations or tests are needed to confirm the diagnosis. Most of the diseases treated by this specialist are chronic diseases and hence, have a significant psychological and physical impact on the Quality of life of patients. Some of these conditions also involve other diseases in the body, and in these cases the Oral Medicine Specialist works as part of a multi-disciplinary patient care team.

The 3 year MDS program offered by the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Faculty of Dental Sciences helps students develop expertise in both Oral medicine and Maxillofacial Radiology. The Department led by coveted faculty members with years of expertise and proficiency in the field, adopts a practice based learning approach where the students get to see, diagnose and put their theoretical knowledge into practice. Post Graduate students are also given the opportunity to brainstorm new ideas and incorporate them into research based practice, performing several less explored diagnostic procedures like Sialography, Low Level Laser Therapies, Light based diagnosis of Premalignant and Malignant conditions. 

The Department is also unique in its own way as it offers CBCT radiographic services to the patients thereby having a large patient database, offering a great potential for conducting short term studies and researches for the Post Graduate students. 

“Navajeevana Tobacco Cessation Clinic”, a part of the Oral Medicine and Radiology Department, which goes by the motto ​“Prevention is better than Cure”, enlightens the practice of tobacco awareness and counseling to both UG and PG students by providing personalized counseling sessions for patients addicted to the habit of tobacco use and screening camps as part of the Department’s outreach efforts to serve the underprivileged communities across the state and monthly practice of the same to various institutions at national level both on online and offline platforms
