Overview
Periodontics as a specialty in dentistry encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and the treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth, their substitution, maintenance, and aesthetics. Periodontal diseases are one of the leading causes of tooth mortality, it is essential to enhance awareness in people and health care professionals about it. Adequate knowledge is of utmost importance in the treatment of periodontal diseases
Objective
The program is designed to prepare professionals with competence in general and special areas of interest with clinical proficiency and in research and its methodology.
- To impart knowledge on growth and development of the stomatognathic system in general and the periodontium in particular.
- To enhance the understanding of the common oral and systemic diseases affecting the periodontium including the etiology, clinical manifestations, and differential diagnoses.
- To critically analyse various treatment options and deliver them efficiently in an evidence-based rational approach.
- To develop knowledge and skills in the science and practice of Oral Implantology.
- To impart training on instruments and techniques for various procedures for periodontal treatment.
- To provide a general perspective and opportunities for a career in periodontics

Programme specialisation Teaching Module (PSTM) 1 — 6
There are two components to this. Component 1 (Continuous Evaluation of Module CEM) for PSTM 1 – 6 includes theory assessment, assignment, clinical assessment, and viva voce.
Component 2 (Programme End Exam CEE) has a theory component, clinical component, pedagogy and viva voce.
Theory component
Part I
- Paper I: Applied Basic Sciences: Applied Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Research Methodology and Biostatistics
- Written examination of three hours.
Part-II
- Paper I: Normal Periodontal structure, Etiology and Pathogenesis of Periodontal diseases, epidemiology as related to Periodontics
- Paper II: Periodontal diagnosis, therapy and oral implantology
- Written examination of three hour durations with long answer questions of 25 marks and five questions of 10 marks each.
- Paper III: Descriptive and analysing type question
- Essay type questions in which students have to answer two out of three questions on recent advances.
Clinical Component
A structured clinical exam for different exercises will be assessed for 200 marks.
- Case discussion and performing a periodontal flap surgery for one quadrant (140 marks)
- Case discussion and planning of comprehensive periodontal treatment regimen (60 marks)
- Performing and interpretation of Radiographs (70 marks)
Pedagogy and Viva voce Component
A structured viva voce exam for 80 marks and pedagogy for 20 marks conducted during a clinical exam
Research, Faculty Common and Elective Modules
These modules will be assessed as per the norms as specified in the module specification. The assessment for these modules is through tests, presentations or any other method as specified in the module specification

Eligibility
Candidates must have a recognised degree of Bachelor’s in Dental Surgery awarded by a University or institute in India and registered with the State Dental Council. The Candidate must have obtained a provisional or permanent registration and undergone compulsory rotatory internship for a year in an approved and recognised dental college

The students aspiring for admission are required to appear and qualify the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET-MDS) conducted on all India basis.

Eligibility
- The Council may, on payment of the prescribed fee for registration, grant temporary registration for the duration of the post-graduate training restricted to the dental college/institution to which he or she is admitted for the time being exclusively for post-graduate studies: Provided further that temporary registration to such foreign national shall be subject to the condition that such person is duly registered as medical practitioner in his/her own country from which he/she has obtained his/her basics dental qualification and that his/her degree is recognized by the corresponding state dental council or concerned authority

- Should have proof of proficiency in English with a minimum TOEFL score of 8
