FDS

Overview

The Faculty of Dental Sciences (FDS) was originally established as the M S Ramaiah Dental College and Hospital in 1991.

Today, FDS offers a 4‑year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree and a 3‑year Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degree. Students can also opt for the Faculty’s certificate programs in Aesthetic Dentistry and Oral Implantology, or for its academic research programs. The programs are carefully designed to ensure compliance with the norms prescribed by the Dental Council of India (DCI).

FDS’s curriculum is outcome-based and industry-focused. It seeks to complement theoretical learning with a strong focus on practical application. A significant portion of the out-of-class learning takes place at the Faculty’s attached hospital which has more than 250 dental chairs, well-equipped laboratories, and other facilities that provide clinical services. Students are also trained at adopted hospitals in and around Bengaluru, as well as at outreach centres and camps.

This exposure to the practice of dental care and the Faculty’s emphasis on learning by observation and doing equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to ensure a smooth transition from academics to real-world practice.

The Faculty of Dental Sciences is led by a team of experienced faculty members who are well-trained in research. They have presented their findings at prestigious conferences and seminars, and have also published more than 50 papers annually in peer-reviewed journals. They are thus perfectly placed to guide and shape the next generation of dental health practitioners.

At FDS, we believe that a comprehensive education helps create compassionate professionals and leaders who give back to society. Our Department of Public Health Dentistry actively works to inculcate a sense of social responsibility among students through regular dental camps, community orientation programs, and school dental health programs.

The Faculty also seeks to establish collaborative agreements with reputed institutions, like the dental schools in Hong Kong and Belgium. These provide students the option to pursue their internships internationally as well.

Further, FDS has an active dental education unit that supports and paves the way for innovation in the dental sciences. It also published the Journal of Orofacial & Dental Research, an international, peer reviewed journal of repute.
